Operated by the Aspen Institute and located on its historic campus just steps away from the Aspen Music Festival's main tent, the Bayer Center preserves the art and legacy of Herbert Bayer (1900–1985)-a leading artist and designer of the twentieth century who studied and taught at the Bauhaus before emigrating from Germany to the United States in 1938.

Bayer relocated to Aspen in 1946 and spent the next three decades transforming the region-playing a central role in the postwar revitalization of the city of Aspen, and crafting the early identity and campus of the Aspen Institute.

The center's inaugural exhibition-Herbert Bayer: An Introduction-is the first U.S.-based exhibition since 1973 to present a career-wide survey of the artist's work from the late 1910s to the mid-1980s. Guest Curator Bernard Jazzar's exhibition provides a contemporary reexamination of Bayer's prolific career through a showing of over 150 modernist masterpieces, including paintings, watercolors, textiles, and photographs.

Beyond producing fine art exhibitions, the Bayer Center promotes public understanding of art, design, and media through public programming, community engagement, educational initiatives, and the support of scholarly research.
