The Story of Jiggs Landing: 80 Years of Angling, Music, and Home
The story of Jiggs Landing is a classic tale of love at first cast, rooted in the unexpected beauty of the Florida wilderness. It all began in 1944 when Jiggs and Agnes Metcalf arrived in Bradenton, Florida, from North Carolina on what was meant to be a scouting trip for a winter home.
To Agnes's dismay, Jiggs had a singular focus: fishing. While Agnes anticipated house viewings, Jiggs poured over maps, scouting for the perfect angling spot. His eye landed on an arrowhead-shaped peninsula upstream from the Manatee River. Convinced this was the place, he set off, Agnes reluctantly in tow.
The very first cast Jiggs made upon reaching that point delivered the largest Largemouth Bass of his entire life. He took one look at Agnes and declared, "Agnes, we are moving here."
From Schoolhouse to Sanctuary
The following year, by November 1945, the Metcalfs had officially transitioned from visitors to permanent residents. Jiggs, with an eye for salvage and a deep sense of commitment, secured cypress lumber from an old, decommissioned schoolhouse he'd heard about in town. With the help of family and friends, the old building was carefully disassembled and the materials were transported to the banks of the Braden River and Ward Lake.
A cabin and a storage building quickly took shape, marking the beginning of Jiggs Landing. It didn't take long for them to fully commit, selling their North Carolina home and converting the large, emptied storage building into the now-famous Bait Shop.
A Legacy of Music and Family
The family grew when Jiggs and Agnes adopted their niece, Sandy. It was Sandy's musical talent that began to fill the quiet air of Jiggs Landing. Her skillful piano playing charmed the patrons, turning a simple fishing camp into a place where the joy of music was as essential as a good catch.
80 Years Later: A Timeless Treasure
That was 1945, and here we are in 2025-and remarkably, not much has changed. The spirit of Jiggs and Agnes lives on.
Jiggs Landing still offers cabins to rent (now updated with the comforts of Air Conditioning and Smart TVs!), the iconic Bait Shop, boat rentals, food, beer and wine and most importantly: music!
To celebrate this incredible 80-year milestone, the air will once again be filled with melody! We're hosting a grand musical celebration featuring two incredible local rock bands ready to knock your socks off.
And to satisfy your thirst for the Fall season, we're serving a special celebratory brew: the uniquely crafted "Sweet Potato Casserole."
Come join us and be a part of the next chapter in the rich history of Jiggs Landing!
