Ada S. Johnson Christian Education Lecture
Saturday, June 7, 2025, 1500 - 1700
Malawi Pastor to Keynote Annual Johnson Lecture
Warrenton, NC
Oak Chapel AME Church will launch it's annual Ada Strong Johnson Christian Education Lecture Saturday, June 7 at 3:00 PM. The Reverend Rosetta Swinton, Presiding Elder of the Mulanje District in Malawi will bring the keynote address. Her message will also include a presentation of her work to establish community gardens at the 18 churches in her charge. Swinton is a Charleston, South Carolina native who has lived and worked in Malawi for the past 17 years. She is a licensed nurse and holds a Master of Divinity from Payne Theological Seminary.
The annual lecture is named in honor of longtime church leader, public educator and community activist Ada Strong Johnson. Ms. Johnson was a stalwart of Oak Chapel in her lifetime and is remembered for her unwavering commitment to children both in and outside of the church. She was also a community historian, taking the initiative to write and publish a detailed record of African American business and community life in Warren County a passion now taken up by her daughter Jennie Franklin.
"The purpose of the event is to emphasize and celebrate Christian education as both learning and doing the gospel," reflects Oak Chapel pastor, Reverend Cathy Alston-Kearney. "The work Elder Swinton is doing around food security in Malawi is a mirror image of what we are attempting to do here in Warrenton with our Everlasting Community Garden. The message we want to send is God's concern for all people can be experienced through His church."
The public is invited to the lecture and reception that follows. Contact Pastor Cathy Alston-Kearney at calstonkearney.cak@gmail.com.
