Art Reception, In the Moment with Scott Conary and Michael Steinbrick

In the Moment, will feature the work of contemporary artists, painter Scott Conary and Michael Steinbrick.

"At first glance, these two artists have nothing in common. But they do. Each is a modern painter with a foot firmly planted in nostalgia-the type that makes your mind wander or your heart ache a little, though you're not exactly sure why," Owner and Curator Steve Bowersock says. "Both men have a very clear individual style, and each is a master of their discipline."

In the Moment, will be the featured exhibit at the Bowersock Gallery, 373 Commercial Street, Provincetown, from Friday, August 8 through August 26, with an opening reception on Friday, August 8 from 7 to 9 p.m.

"One of the strongest elements the work of these two men shares is the sense that behind the realism is a dream or unearthly element," Bowersock adds. "It's all about the visual metonym-the story within the ordinary image set askew with intent."

Contemporary realist painter Scott Conary (BFA, Rhode Island School of Design, Providence) puts an individual spin on everyday objects and places-props used to comment on the world around us.

Conary's urban and city landscapes and still lifes often have the quality of dreams, simultaneously imparting a sense of solidity and ephemerality. They also question the norm; each an image of tension, often eliciting an expectation of "a questionable outcome."

"Scott's work is moving and unique. A deceivingly simple object is transformed into an emotional flashpoint-something our mind reaches to understand, or a memory long forgotten," Bowersock says. "There's always a sense of more being there. The work compels the viewer to look further."

Photorealist Michael Steinbrick's distinctive works of reflection and refraction move between the known and comfortable to the unsettling and destabilizing, from nostalgic to futuristic. Whatever the image, it is powerful, in-your-face, and challenging.

"In a word, Michael's work is exciting-the color, strength, and image energize, while addressing energies just beneath the surface," Bowersock says. "He's a master of capturing a fleeting moment and manipulating feelings."

Steinbrick received a BFA from Montclair State University, Montclair, NJ, and studied at Constantijn Huygens Academy, Kampen, the Netherlands. His work has been exhibited worldwide.

"In the Moment, is a powerful show featuring two men at the top of their game," Bowersock says. "One plays it soft, one hard, and both grip their audience."
