Barcelona Flamenco Ballet Carmen - Glendale, CA March 1 2026

The Barcelona Flamenco Ballet presents a bold and contemporary reinterpretation of "Carmen," Bizet's iconic myth, which goes beyond the traditional narrative to explore the current struggle for women's rights. In this version, Carmen, a powerful and passionate gypsy, confronts an unequal world, becoming a symbol of freedom and courage. Her love affair with the bullfighter Escamillo weaves an intense story expressed through dazzling flamenco choreography, combined with explosive footwork and elements of modern dance.

The work masterfully integrates the sounds of a symphony orchestra with Bizet's original music, incorporating innovative touches of jazz and the authentic expression of flamenco singing. Under the creative direction of David Gutierrez, this production not only pays homage to the work of Prosper Merimee, but also reflects the cultural diversity of Barcelona, where Franco experienced firsthand the many languages and styles that surround it.

This show is designed to captivate both opera lovers and flamenco enthusiasts, offering an enriching experience that opens the door to a new paradigm in 21st-century performing arts. The fusion of different stage formats and the collaboration with leading artists from around the world promise to take the audience on an emotional journey that celebrates the passion, pain, and freedom that Carmen symbolizes.
