Blackburn Frailty Team takes on 3 Yorkshire Peaks Challenge to raise money for dementia care
Saturday, October 4, 2025, 0630 - 1830
We are a team on the Frailty Wards at Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital walking the Yorkshire Three Peaks to raise money for the hospital's charity ELHT&Me to be used for dementia services on our wards.
Our group of MFOP (medicine for older people) clinicians based on B2 and B4 at Blackburn, are getting prepared for the 12-hour, 24-mile challenge of walking Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough on Saturday, 4 October.
Consultant for the elderly, Alina Sanda Gilligan, said: "We have just moved into a newly refurbished B2 and B4 is currently being refurbished and will be ready in October and together this will be the new Frailty Unit.
"As such, we are seeing a lot of patients living with dementia staying on our wards so we are enthusiastic about making them dementia friendly by producing a familiar environment.
"Therefore, we are going to create a day room; a homely space for patients to go and spend some peaceful time away from their bed, make the wards lighter, hang pictures and design a courtyard on the ground level into a little garden which the patients can look out onto from the day room window or even visit with a support worker.
"These additional fixture and fittings are proven to help to re-orientate confused patients sooner and ease their distress of being in an unfamiliar environment. This helps to stop their decline which comes with being in hospital and reduces their length of stay."
