Captain Planet Learning Garden Grants for Arizona Elementary Schools - Apply by Oct. 30

Arizona elementary schools are invited to apply for the 2026 Learning Garden Grant Contest from The Raley's Companies, including Bashas' and Food City, and Captain Planet Foundation.
Three eligible elementary schools across Arizona and New Mexico will be selected to receive a Captain Planet Foundation Project Learning Garden package, bringing hands-on STEAM education, nutrition lessons, and garden-based learning directly to students.
WHAT SCHOOLS CAN RECEIVE
Schools without an existing garden are eligible for a Learning Garden package valued at $7,500, including:
- Five raised garden beds with soil
- A fully equipped Mobile Cooking Cart for preparing garden-fresh recipes
- Standards-based online garden lessons and project materials
- Professional development and training for teachers
- Strategies for summer garden maintenance
Schools that already have an onsite garden are eligible for a garden-improvement package valued at $5,500, including $4,500 in garden improvements, program materials, a Mobile Cooking Cart, professional development and teacher training, and strategies for summer garden maintenance.
WHO CAN APPLY
Nominated schools must:
- Be a state-accredited elementary school serving grades K-5
- Be located within 10 miles of an eligible Bashas', Bashas' Diné Market or Food City location in Arizona
- Not be a homeschool or online program
Eligible applicants must be at least 18 years old and may be an authorized school official or someone associated with the nominated school, such as a teacher or parent, who can obtain the signature of an authorized school official.
Only one application per school will be accepted.
The application must include a signed Learning Gardens Letter of Agreement from the school's principal.
APPLICATION DEADLINE
Arizona applications must be submitted by 8:59 p.m. Arizona time on Friday, Oct. 30, 2026.
Potential winning schools are expected to be notified on or about Dec. 11, 2026.

The Learning Gardens program gives children hands-on opportunities to grow and prepare fresh fruits and vegetables while learning about nutrition, STEAM concepts, and where their food comes from.
Students at schools receiving new Learning Gardens will also participate in the installation process, including assembling raised garden beds, filling them with soil, and planting vegetables and herbs. Schools with existing gardens will receive enhancements designed to expand their garden-based learning opportunities.
