First Congregational Church of Cadillac - United Church of Christ Celebrates 102 Years in Its Historic Home: A Centennial Plus Two Celebration of Faith, Music, and Community

On Saturday, September 13, 2025, the First Congregational Church of Cadillac joyfully invites the entire community to join in celebrating the 100 + 2 Year Centennial of its beloved church building. Though the pandemic delayed the original 100th anniversary celebration, this milestone remains a testament to the church's enduring presence and evolving mission in the heart of Downtown Cadillac. Festivities begin at 2:00 PM and all are welcome to attend this free, family-friendly event.

This centennial celebration is more than just a look back - it's a moment to honor the vibrant history of one of Cadillac’s oldest and most inclusive faith communities, while inviting neighbors and visitors alike to experience the beauty, music, and message that continue to thrive within its historic walls.

The First Congregational Church was founded in 1882, just a few years after the establishment of the city of Cadillac itself. Born in an era of growth, timber, and frontier spirit, the congregation quickly became a cornerstone of civic and spiritual life. It is now one of only two remaining historic churches on Harris Street, standing as a dignified sentinel to more than a century of faith, community, and progressive theological engagement.

The current building, completed in 1923, has stood as a beacon in Downtown Cadillac for over a century. Crafted with care and built to last, the structure is not only an architectural gem but a space that has nurtured countless generations through worship, service, music, education, and fellowship. The sanctuary maintains a traditional Congregational feel, featuring beautiful unpainted woodwork, historic brass details, and a welcoming warmth that speaks to its enduring legacy.

Originally slated for 2023, the pandemic postponed what was to be the 100th anniversary of the building. Now, in 2025, the church is ready to open its doors wide and welcome the entire community to this Centennial Plus Two celebration - a joyful day of reflection, learning, and music.

The afternoon kicks off at 2:00 PM with live music from parish members and a special demonstration of the church’s historic pipe organ. Whether you're a longtime music lover or simply curious about the powerful resonance of a traditional organ, this is a treat for the senses.

From 3:15 to about 4:15 PM, a featured presentation will be given by local historian Richard Shults, representing the Wexford County Historical Society and Museum. Shults will offer a compelling look into the church’s role in Cadillac's development and its cultural and theological significance.

Between the musical and historical segments, guests are invited to enjoy light refreshments and explore the church's interior, taking in its unique design and preserved craftsmanship. The church is ADA accessible, and members will be on hand to assist and answer questions.

One of the most compelling aspects of First Congregational Church of Cadillac is its unique theological identity. While rooted in the "New Theology" of the late 1800s - a progressive movement born out of Andover Newton Seminary - the church today is known for its inclusive theology, its interfaith openness, and its deep commitment to spiritual exploration and justice.

This open-hearted approach has long distinguished the congregation as a welcoming place for those from a wide variety of religious backgrounds and spiritual paths. Whether you were raised in a different tradition, have felt disconnected from organized religion, or are simply curious about a more inclusive approach to faith, First Congregational offers a spiritual home without dogma or judgment.

This commitment to inclusion is reflected in every aspect of church life, from its worship services and education programs to its community partnerships and social justice efforts. The Centennial Plus Two celebration is an extension of that ethos: a gathering for all people, from all walks of life, to come together in celebration, learning, and connection.

In a world that often feels divided, disconnected, and hurried, places like First Congregational Church offer something rare: a place to pause, to remember, and to celebrate what connects us. This centennial event is not just a church milestone - it's a community celebration. It's a reminder that buildings can carry stories, that traditions can evolve, and that faith, when grounded in love and justice, can still light the way forward.

Whether you're a Cadillac native, a lover of local history, a seeker of spiritual community, or simply someone who enjoys good music and fellowship, you are warmly invited.
