Dance on the Shore
Thursday, September 3, 2026, 1800 - 1900
A beautiful triple bill with works by Cori Caulfield, Virginia Duivenvoorden and Dance//Novella
Cori Caulfield has toured extensively with her "meticulously crafted solos" (The Globe and Mail) having full-length solo evenings, ensemble works, and shorter pieces presented across Canada, the U.S., and in Europe and Asia. Cori has also instructed, choreographed, and lectured for many organizations, both locally and abroad, including her own coriograph theatre and Caulfield School of Dance; Ballet British Columbia (through MovEnt); the response (Amber Funk Barton), Victoria's Belfry Theatre (for the Electric Company Theatre); and various Canadian universities. From a Guest Artist residency at William Forsythe's Ballett Frankfurt, Cori toured internationally for over 5 years with Kidd Pivot. She has also performed in the works of other renowned Canadian choreographers including Donald Sales and Cherice Barton, Marie Chouinard, Josh Beamish, Jennifer Mascall, Cornelius Fischer-Credo's, and Margie Gillis. Cori has worked in professional theatre, high fashion, and performed professionally as a dancer, actor, and singer.
Promptly: Excerpt is about Authentic Investigation of Artistic Intelligence and Audience Interaction. These forms of AI are the opposite of artificial. By inviting prompts from the audience, the dancer and musician invite the viewer to co-create a real human experience, with real people, in real time. The performers, with lifetimes of experience in live creation, delight in playing well with others.
Dance//Novella
Dance//Novella - Racheal and Brandon
Racheal Prince and Brandon Lee Alley are Vancouver-based choreographers and Co-Artistic Directors of Dance//Novella, a contemporary dance-theatre company they founded in 2019. Both former artists with Ballet BC, their work brings together movement, sound, design, and theatricality through a collaborative and interdisciplinary approach.
Their choreographic work has been developed and presented across Canada and internationally, with residencies and support from Ballet BC, Dance Victoria, The Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, The Polygon Gallery, and The Dance Centre. Their work has been presented through the Vancouver International Dance Festival, Dancing on the Edge, Chutzpah! Festival, SOUND OFF, International Dance Day, and Men in Dance in Seattle.
Their body of work includes When the Walls Come Down, an ASL-integrated dance-theatre work created in collaboration with Deaf artists; STANCE and its reimagining, Soft Animals; Night is the Mother; and The Sound of Disappearing. Their work moves between abstraction and narrative, exploring memory, identity, connection, and the complexity of being human.
Prince and Alley have also created commissioned works for Alberta Ballet and SALT Contemporary Dance, extending their choreographic practice across contemporary dance and ballet-informed contexts.
A Night of Love, Lilium, and Siphonophore offer three distinct glimpses into Dance//Novella's creative practice, each developed in close collaboration with the performing artists.
A Night of Love highlights the company's theatrical practice, bringing character, intimacy, and movement together to create a playful exploration of human connection. Lilium shifts toward a more physical movement vocabulary, placing the body and its expressive possibilities at the centre of the work. Inspired by polymorphic organisms, Siphonophore explores connection and fluidity through the relationship between two dancers, shaped by its music and the striking costume design of Saffron Thomas.
Together, the three works move between theatre, physicality, and visual design, reflecting the different ways Dance//Novella approaches movement and performance.
Virginia Duivenvoorden
Duivenvoorden is a performing artist, choreographer, and educator whose practice spans performance, film, teaching, and community-engaged dance. Born in the UK and of Irish and English descent, she has lived on Coast Salish Territory since childhood. Trained at Arts Umbrella, SFU, and the European Dance Development Centre (now ArtEZ), she began her career with Karen Jamieson Dance, later performing solo works by Serge Bennathan and Cornelius FischerCredo. Her choreographic practice emerged while studying in the Netherlands, where she collaborated on dance, installation, and multimedia works. Returning to Canada, she continued her practice developing choreography and teaching before retiring from dance due to injury. After a long recovery Virginia returned to dance professionally in 2017. She is joyful to have since had the opportunity to work with fellow artists including Claire French and the team with re:group, engaging in movement research and collaboration. Virginia has also worked with Kay Huang, whose artistic input has been integral to many choreographic explorations.
