EverGREEN-UP Community Day at Evergreen Cemetery! June 13, 2026, 154 Business Rte 4, Rutland, Vt

Evergreen Cemetery is an official Vermont State Historic Place (signage coming). Starting immediately after its near-closure in June 2024, each year volunteers have gathered on one day to help nurture and restore our park-like resting grounds. Nearly 15,000 former residents, political figures, military heroes and other famous people are interred at Evergreen, including Col. James Mead, the FIRST SETTLER of Rutland itself. Read the attached flyer image. Water and donuts will be provided. This is an ORGANIZED EVENT. You will NOT BE expected to figure out what to do. The cemetery Superintendent will direct volunteers to the areas where the most help is needed, based upon what type of assistance you are able to provide. Even smaller CHILDREN can help! Most areas that need to be mowed are frequently littered with small branches that have to be picked up and moved aside before a mower can safely pass. They are generally easy to handle, sometimes comparable to a stick that a dog would fetch. Previous events can be viewed on our Facebook page "Friends of Evergreen Cemetery, Rutland Vermont located here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/521374050963163 and clicking first the MEDIA, then the ALBUMS buttons. You can say afterwards that you personally notched your place in history by helping to save a State Historic Place...soon to potentially become listed as a NATIONAL Historic Place (the application process has already begun). If the application is approved, Evergreen Cemetery will join the existing 12 Rutland City places which are currently listed in the National Historic Register as the ONLY cemetery on that list.
