About Our Program:
Make history interesting and fun! Join Beth Daly on December 27, as she reviews highlights of Historic Fredericksburg Foundation Incorporated's/(HFFI)'s highly successful holiday Candlelight Tours of the past half century, and this year's Holiday Open House at their headquarters, the historic Fielding Lewis Store, 1200 Caroline Street.
This month's presentation, complete with beautiful photographs, shows how HFFI effectively advocates for preservation while celebrating the holiday season. For over 50 years, HFFI sponsored a holiday candlelight tour, even during COVID. Pivoting to accommodate the times, HFFI orchestrated the 2020 and 2021 tours virtually by smartphone. Building on HFFI's Historic Marker program, which has over 300 markers, they recruited over 130 homeowners in Fredericksburg to decorate the exteriors of their homes for the month of December. (The richness of Fredericksburg's history is evidenced by more than a dozen buildings from the 1700's, and hundreds of buildings from the 1800 and 1900's, each, which are noted on the current Historic Marker Map.) Pedestrians and drivers could follow the map and hear a short history and description of each home.
Last year, the 2022 Candlelight Tour returned to the traditional in-home event. It was in College Heights, highlighting mid-20th century modern homes. Beth's recap of the tour at the FXBG Torch December 2022 meeting was so well received, it inspired us to ask her for an encore presentation this year. For various reasons, this year instead of leading Candlelight Tours, HFFI had a free, one-day holiday open house at their headquarters on December 9, featuring activities for all ages – HFFI wants to make history interesting and fun with themed history walking tours of neighborhoods, featuring crafts, food, cider-tasting, music, and the Nat’s mascot, Gus. Take advantage of this year's break from the traditional Candlelight Tours. Instead of braving the weather, enjoy a festive holiday meal with the FXBG Torch Club, to take in 50+ years of HFFI regular and holiday programming in Beth's presentation.
Beth Daly is a long time resident of Fredericksburg. She is a significant researcher for and contributing writer to many of HFFI's reference materials and books, including the Historic Marker Map; Fredericksburg: The Official Guide; many Candlelight Tour scripts, and their most recent book, Homes For the Holidays: Historic Fredericksburg's Candlelight Tradition. Because she is heavily involved in HFFI's Oral History Project, her profound presentation illuminates the human side of Fredericksburg's 300 year history, w/both tragic and comedic stories.
