Go Big Read: "The House on Mango Street"
Thursday, February 26, 2026, 1700 - 1900
Sheldon Museum of Art partners with Nebraska Athletics, Linked2Literacy, and the Indian Center Inc. for an evening of stories and art. Inspired by the book "The House on Mango Street" by Sandra Cisneros and the exhibition "Hyphen American: Intersections of Identity," the event invites families to discover connections between the art and novel through readings, performances, and more.
This program is free and open to everyone. No registration is required.
About Linked2Literacy
Linked2Literacy is a local non-profit organization that is dedicated to closing the literacy gap within this Lincoln community. Through partnerships and events, they have distributed thousands of books and provided essential literacy skills.
About Indian Center Inc.
The Indian Center Inc.'s mission is to provide value to the American Indian community by creating and obtaining programs that empower self-sufficiency and positive quality of life standards in individuals and families. They do this through large public and community events that support initiatives related to the Indigenous community in our area.
About "The House on Mango Street"
"The House on Mango Street" is a classic coming-of-age novel by Sandra Cisneros, structured as a series of vignettes, that follows young Chicana Esperanza Cordero growing up in the Hispanic quarter of Chicago. The book explores themes of identity, poverty, and the search for self-discovery through Esperanza's experiences with her family, friends, and neighborhood, as she dreams of a better life and a house of her own, while vowing to return for those she leaves behind.
About Go Big Read and Reflect
The exhibition "Hyphen American: Intersections of Identity" plays a big role during Nebraska Athletics and Linked2Literacy's Go Big READ week as we connect chapters of "The House on Mango Street" to each of the exhibition's galleries for an evening of family-friendly immersive cultural experiences.
