6:30-7:30 PM: guided tasting with winemaker, Cary Quintana
7:30-8:00 PM: Open tasting and discussion
Join us for an intimate tasting with local winemaker extraordinaire, Cary Quintana of Cary Q wines.
For Cary, making wine is a visceral, spiritual and philosophical validation of her very being. It is beyond grounding and approaches a form of metaphysics. It is as much a practice in mindfulness as it is a craft. Cary uprooted her Miami-Cuban self and replanted in Berkeley. Taking core principles from UCD's E&V program and fusing intuition with skilled advice from supportive winemakers and farmers, Cary launched her low-intervention label with organic fruit from Sonoma in 2014. Thus began her next chapter: learning how to let go and embrace variation. Rather than working to correct or mitigate vicissitudes, Cary honed timing and technique to leverage the unique opportunities of a vintage. Winemaker Jiu Jitsu.
Whether it's her wisdom working its way into wine or her winemaking working its way into her life is hard to tell now. Humility, creativity, patience, honesty and connection-these are her driving principles. This is what you are tasting when you drink Cary Q wines: a life unfolding gracefully, with intention and awe before the majesty that nature delivers into her hands.
In this unique opportunity, Cary will share the stories and details behind the making of four of her wines - 2023 Picpoul - Fenaughty Vineyard, 2023 Cinsault- Fenaughty Vineyard, 2023-GMT (Grenache, Mourvedre, and Tempranillo blend)-Shake Ridge Ranch, and her 2022 -Mourvedre - Shake Ridge Vineyard. She will cover how everything in a vintage - from harvest conditions to pick strategies, press, fermentation and aging practices - influenced the outcome of these wines. As a group, Cary will not only tell us the story behind each wine, but she'll help us identify and taste elements of each stage in her winemaking process.
Doors open at 5p, Cary will pour and discuss her wines in detail from 6:30 - 7:30p and hold an open pour and Q&A from 7:30-8p. Drop-ins welcome! $15 includes full pour of Donkey and Goat plus guided tasting.
This event is a natural evolution of our Sip and Savor guest winemaker series, with a keener focus on education and experience, allowing the winemaker to guide an intimate group of tasters through their wines and approach. These tasting experiences are open to all - no formal wine education is required to participate. Our aim is to cultivate community and to start meaningful conversations.
We hope to see you here!
