La Llorona: Halloween Day Performance
Saturday, October 31, 2026, 1400 - 1600
This Halloween, experience the legend of La Llorona as you have never seen it before.
Ballet 5:8 brings La Llorona to The Hemmens Cultural Center in Elgin on October 31 at 2:00 PM, in collaboration with the Elgin Public Library. Children and families are welcome, and young audience members are encouraged to attend in costume.
Before she was a ghost story, La Llorona was a mother no one knew how to help.
Choreographed by Ballet 5:8 Artistic Director Julianna Rubio Slager, La Llorona reimagines the well-known Mexican legend through the story of Maria, a new mother experiencing postpartum depression. Rather than presenting Maria as a monster, the ballet approaches her story with tenderness, empathy and compassion.
As Maria’s illness begins to distort her world, her husband, family and community struggle to understand what is happening and how to help her. The familiar legend becomes a deeply human story about love, isolation, mental health, family and the urgent need to recognize someone in crisis.
Told entirely through movement, music and theatrical imagery, La Llorona is an emotionally immersive performance created for ballet audiences and newcomers alike. No knowledge of ballet is required, and the nonverbal format makes the story accessible to English-speaking, Spanish-speaking and bilingual audiences.
The production invites audiences to see the legend differently while opening an important conversation about postpartum depression, cultural stigma, care and hope.
Audiences have described La Llorona as powerful, deeply emotional and unlike any version of the story they had encountered before. Healthcare professionals and families affected by postpartum depression have also praised the ballet for portraying maternal mental health with honesty and compassion.
