Musical Soulmates Black Classical Mother's Day Celebration

Musical Soulmates is once again proud to offer a rich musical experience on Mother's Day. Honoring the fact that the Black church was the first stage for countless Black musicians and poets, we hold this concert at the historic Progressive Missionary Baptist Church in Santa Cruz (517 Center Street). The Sanctuary will be housing many plants- on loan from The Garden Company, a locally owned Black Business, to amplify the theme of Nature expressed throughout the program. Come and be saturated with rich and artful harmonies,exhilarating and also contemplative moods, poems by legendary African American poets set to words and of purely instrumental music almost all by Black composers (Nadine Shanti, Adolphus Hailstork, Florence Price and many more). Interspersed with the music will be commentary on the Black Diasporic experience as expressed in the music by musicologist Ontario Alexander. Candace Johnson, melismatic, multi genre artist, Soprano, and ShannonD'Antonio, violin, collabaorate with Kate Saphir Alm, piano. There will also be treats and favors from local Black owned businesses (Spontaneous Confections and The Garden Company).
