Pancake Breakfast and Speaker

Noted author, popular speaker, and media commentator, Dr. Bruce Forbes, will speak on the religious and historical significance of our holidays on Jan. 17, at Willowbrook United Methodist Church, 19390 N. 99th Ave., Sun City.
The presentation will take place during a pancake breakfast which runs from 8 to 11 a.m. at the church hall. Forbes' remarks will be offered at 10 a.m. The event is hosted by the Willowbrook Men's Fellowship Group. Tickets are available through the church and at the door.
Forbes is a former department chair and professor of Religious Studies at Morningside University, Sioux City, Iowa. In addition to being an ordained minister in the United Methodist Church, Forbes is the author of "Christmas: A Candid History" and "America's Favorite Holidays: Candid Histories," and the co-editor of "Religion and Popular Culture in America" and "Rapture, Revelation and the End Times: An Exploration of the Left Behind Series."
Forbes taught at Morningside for 40 years, during which time he won numerous awards and served as the faculty adviser for the Phi Eta Sigma and Omicron Delta Kappa honor societies, before his retirement in 2018.
Forbes resides in Minnesota and continues to be a sought-after lecturer in his retirement. His research has made him a national go-to expert on holidays, including appearances on news outlets such as CBS Sunday Morning.
Forbes' visit coincides with the church's 50th anniversary and is one of several special events the church is hosting over the next several months. Willowbrook United Methodist Church hosted its first-ever church service on Easter Sunday, April 18, 1976, presided by The Rev. Albert J. Wilson, who was joined by 37 people. The church was officially constituted on May 16, 1976. The next year, 250 members voted to construct a church at its current Sun City location.
