Ripen Our Darkness

Everyone assumes Mary is stark raving mad.

The dinner is never ready on time, the laundry needs to be sorted, and the washing-up from Sunday lunch still hasn't been done. Her husband, David, wonders despairingly how anyone could ever be so hopelessly disorganised.

Of course the men in her life reach for the obvious solution: she must be insane.

Sarah Daniels' landmark queer, feminist comedy weaves together the stories of women across the social spectrum, exploring the mental toll the patriarchy takes on women through the institutions of marriage, psychiatry, and religion.
Sharp, witty, and frequently very funny, the play finds its salvation not in men or God, but in the fierce and unwavering solidarity between women.

A groundbreaking work that is as vital today as the day it premiered at the Royal Court in 1981.
