Screening: Sugar Island | ADIFF Chicago Closing Night + Reception and Q and A
Sunday, June 7, 2026, 1800 - 2000
Chicago Premiere
Followed by a Q and A with director Johanne Gomez Terrero and a Closing Night Reception.
Sugar Island immerses us in the sugarcane fields of the Dominican Republic, where Makenya, a Dominican-Haitian teenager, navigates an unwanted pregnancy and the harsh labor conditions that shape her world.
Blending social realism, spirituality, and Afro-futurism, director Johanné Gómez Terrero crafts a visually striking meditation on identity, displacement, and survival while exposing the enduring legacy of colonial exploitation. As Makenya confronts family pressures and uncertain futures, the arrival of a mysterious theater troupe reveals haunting connections between past and present struggles.
Lyrical, powerful, and deeply atmospheric, Sugar Island unfolds as a moving reflection on cultural memory, resilience, and the fight for dignity.
