So? Sue Me!
Friday, May 16, 2025, 2000 - 2200
If you thought making fun of crooked lawyers, judges, and litigants is a thing of our times, think again.
It started at least 25 centuries ago, in 422 BCE, when Aristophanes wrote The Wasps. Satire of the judicial and political system was alive and well when Racine wrote Les Plaideurs [The Litigants] in 1668. It was going strong in 1933 when the Marx Brothers wrote Duck Soup.
Aristophanes inspired Racine. The Marx Brothers inspired us to re-translate Racine and give new life to Aristophanes. The result is So? Sue Me! Racine's blueprint, Aristophanes's corrosive humor, and the Marx Brothers' madcap physical comedy.
"A laugh is nothing to be sneezed at..." (Edwin Justus Mayer, To Be or Not To Be, 1942)
