The Emperor and the Nightingale

A traditional marionette performance, based on the story by Hans Christian Andersen. A beautiful and lyrical production with Chinese flute music by Yue Guo. A nightingale sings and charms the Emperor, until a mechanical bird takes its place. When the mechanical bird explodes, the real nightingale returns to sing on its own terms. This is an old story with modern relevance. The show is highly visual and enchants audiences of all ages who all find the experience of a traditional puppet show in a dedicated building fascinating.The perfumers operate the marionettes, or string puppets, from a bridge high above the back of the stage. The scenery is changed by moving scene waggons. All the shows are designed and created at the venue, this show has remained a firm favorite in our repertoire for many years.Some parents are now returning with their children to see a show which they saw as children.Tables for lunch, at the on site vegetarian cafe, can be booked in advance on the Upfront Arts Venue website www.up-front.com.We provide a children's menu and can cater for special dietary needs.Tea and cakes can be bought after the show at the onsite cafe.There is free onsite parking as well as an adapted toilet with baby changing facilities.
