Victorian and Edwardian Favourites - Milton Abbey Church

Step back into the drawing rooms, concert halls and salons of Victorian and Edwardian Britain for an evening of song, storytelling and musical nostalgia.

Featuring acclaimed tenor Ben Johnson and bass James Platt, with pianist Julia Lynch, this recital celebrates a rich tradition of music that once formed the soundtrack of British musical life. Long before recordings and radio brought music into every home, songs such as these were performed around the piano in family parlours and fashionable drawing rooms, delighting audiences with their memorable melodies, poetic texts and heartfelt sentiment.

The programme brings together a selection of beloved songs from the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, ranging from tender ballads and evocative character pieces to songs of romance, humour and reflection. Alongside well-known favourites, audiences will discover lesser-heard gems that capture the elegance, charm and emotional directness of this remarkable repertoire.

Ben Johnson and James Platt are among the most distinguished British singers of their generation, appearing regularly with leading opera companies and concert organisations throughout the UK and internationally. Together with acclaimed Scottish pianist and Artistic Director of the Mascarade Opera Studio, Julia Lynch, they bring warmth, artistry and a deep affection for this repertoire to a programme that celebrates the enduring appeal of Britain's great song tradition.

Whether you know these songs well or are encountering them for the first time, Edwardian and Victorian Favourites promises an evening of captivating music, rich in character, nostalgia and timeless melodic charm.
