Dear Friends,
It is time once again for the Annual Dr. Tamara Hopkins / 40 and 8 Nurses
Training Scholarship Golf Tournament. This year marks our 11th year
hosting the tournament, and we look forward to welcoming friends both old
and new. If you are unable to participate as a golfer, we invite you to consider sponsoring or
making a donation. Your generous support each year has enabled us to award scholarships
to numerous nursing students in our community.
Our mission is especially important as the nursing shortage continues to impact healthcare
nationwide. The COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath exposed critical gaps in care and
intensified the demand for skilled bedside nurses. In the United States alone, millions of
nurses are needed to replace retirees and meet growing healthcare needs. Your support
directly helps students pursue nursing education and strengthens the future of patient care.
You may also be interested in the heritage behind the Forty and Eight. The name originates
from World War I, when American troops were transported to the front lines in French
boxcars marked “40/8,” indicating their capacity to carry either forty men or eight horses.
After the war, veterans adopted this symbol of shared service and sacrifice when founding
La Societe des Quarante Hommes et Huit Chevaux (The Forty and Eight) in 1920 as an
organization of honor. Today, the Forty and Eight continues its legacy through charitable and
patriotic programs that support veterans, their families, child welfare initiatives, and nurse
training scholarships.
All teams, sponsorships, and donations are sincerely appreciated. Please remember that
