Your Data Security Toolkit
Saturday, May 17, 2025, 1500 - 1630
"Privacy is dead" is a refrain Google, Amazon, and Meta would like everyone to embrace. Cybercriminals would also like people to believe this. We believe privacy is dead at our economic and societal peril. Big Tech companies have made it very difficult to hold on to much of the data that makes you, you, but it is possible to thwart some of that data capture. Privacy is not dead if we work to protect it by taking small steps in our personal lives and advocating for its protection in political and commercial spaces.
In this workshop, participants will learn:
- what Big Tech corporations want and why (hint: it's not really about the ads)
- Dr. Shoshana Zuboff's theory of surveillance capitalism
- practical steps to protect at least some of your data and your money
- the types of criminal behavior to be on guard against
The workshop will be interactive so please bring something to write with, a fully charged phone or tablet, and a communal mindset for small group discussions.
Materials will be made digitally available after the session for those who would like to share their learning or further their study.
WORKSHOP PRESENTER: Lisa Hoelscher has an MA in Educational Administration from the University of Illinois and a BA in History and a BS in secondary education from the University of Minnesota. She was a Google Certified Educator and taught Social Studies at a diverse high school in suburban Cook County. She has been a presenter at multiple educational technology conferences, including at the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE).
WORKSHOP SPONSOR: The sponsor for this workshop is CONGREGATIONS NETWORKING FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE (CNSJ), an Oak Park, faith-based group whose mission is building connections among West Cook neighborhoods and faith communities by sharing opportunities for collaboration on social justice action initiatives.
