NOVEMBER 3-5: CELEBRATING BLACK CATHOLIC HISTORY MONTH
The Nun Who Put Her Abbey on the MAP

Mary Elizabeth Lancaster was a Catholic African American nun who founded the Benedictine Sisters of Mary, Queen of the Apostles, a contemplative order of sisters in Missouri. She was born in St. Louis on April 13, 1924, to a devout Catholic family of African American descent. She had a vision of Jesus at her first Communion, when he asked her to be his. She decided to become a nun at the age 10, and she wrote a letter to the Oblate Sisters of Providence in Baltimore, asking to join their convent. She later entered the Oblate Sisters and made her vows as Sister Wilhelmina in 1948. She taught in several schools run by the Oblates and also served as a principal and a superior.

In 1976, at the age of 70, she felt called to start a new foundation of Benedictine nuns dedicated to praying for priests and offering them hospitality. She received permission from her bishop and the Oblate superior general to leave her congregation and begin the new venture. She moved to a small house in Kansas City, Missouri, with two other sisters and started the Benedictines of Mary, Queen of the Apostles. The community grew rapidly and soon moved to a larger property in Gower, Missouri, where they built a monastery and a chapel. The sisters follow the Rule of St. Benedict and wear a traditional habit. They are known for their beautiful singing of Gregorian chant and classic Catholic hymns, which they have recorded on several albums that have topped the charts.

Sister Wilhelmina died on May 21, 2019, at the age of 95. She was buried in a simple wooden coffin in the monastery cemetery. On April 28, 2023, her body was exhumed and found to be remarkably well preserved, which some consider a sign of holiness. Her body was placed in a glass casket and displayed in the chapel for public veneration. Hundreds of pilgrims have visited the monastery to see her remains and pray for her intercession. The sisters have not yet decided whether to pursue an investigation into the possible incorruptibility of her body. However, Sister Wilhelmina is the first African American and the first African American nun to be found incorruptible.

The history of incorruptibility in the Catholic Church is a fascinating topic that has intrigued many believers and scholars over the centuries. Incorruptibility is the belief that some human bodies, especially those of saints and blessed, are preserved from the normal process of decomposition after death as a sign of their holiness. Incorruptibility is a rare and mysterious phenomenon that has inspired many Catholics to deepen their faith and devotion to the saints. It is also a reminder of the dignity and destiny of every human person, who is called to share in the glory of God in body and soul.

Sister Wilhelmina was a great leader and in obedience to God's will. She consecrated her Abbey to Our Lady of Ephesus of Turkey, the place of the first Ecumenical Counsel in the Catholic Church in 325AD,

The singing nuns at Ephesus are the Benedictines of Mary, Queen of Apostles who are based in the Abbey of Our Lady of Ephesus in Missouri, United Statesment. . They are a cloistered order of nuns living by the ancient Rule of St. Benedict3. The community is the only such abbey for traditional nuns in all of North America. The nuns seek to be united with Our Lady at the foot of the cross, seeking above all else a cloistered life of union with God in prayer under the Rule of St. Benedict2. They have a contemplative charism of praying and sacrificing for the sanctification of priests2. The Benedictines of Mary, Queen of. the Apostles were named Billboard's Classical Traditional Artist of 2012 and 2013. They are the first group of nuns to win an award in the history of Billboard humbly with no fanfare.

Since Sister Wilhelmina Exhumation on May 18, 2023. thousands of Pilgrims are line-up daily at the Abbey of Our Lady of Ephesus seeking refuge from the outside world and diffusing the light and finding hope to take back to their communities through Contemplative Prayer. Many people are also finding new vocations, and the Benedictines of Mary are running out of space and can't keep up with the demand. A Second Monastery is due to be completed early next years, and Fund-Raising Drive has begun among the Catholic Diocese in the United States. Sainthood can't be considered until after five years of death.

The Benedictines of Mary take their inspiration from St. Joseph as builders of the faith the Benedictine Way. They welcome an opportunity to tell their story via video at any time during any Catholic Mass in your Diocese. If you would like to have the video chat of the Benedictines of Mary sent to you. Contact the Ambassadors of Peace, Justice and Unity Holy Tours at Email:onegreatwoman@gmail.com or text # 941-228-4288 and the siters will send a letter to your Diocese.
